Day 3 ~ Never Given: Taken Away

Eimear Stassin on our visit during April 2016

It's Day 3 of the Be Yourself Writing Challenge.

Today is about a story of the thing you were never given and how it shaped you.

Being present.

At The Exhale.

That Final Exhale.

Was a privilege.

A privilege to savour.

A privilege to cherish.

A sacred privilege.

Completing the cycle.

From birth to death.

From first inhale.

To last exhale.

Ending the sequence.

'I won't see you grow up'

'I won't meet any of your future children'

'Look after your mother'

He said.

Selflessly.

Selfishly I savoured.

Those final months.

Those final weeks.

Those last few days.

The last few hours.

The final minutes.

That last second.

Silently I mourned.

Secretly I wished

That this was happening

To some other family.

That ours could remain

Whole and complete.

Alive and full of life.

That stillness

that came

after

that exhale.

That final exhale.

Was peaceful.

So full of peace.

I remember as if it was yesterday.

A teenager.

Whisked to the hospital

from Uni

By my neighbour.

'He does not have long to live,'

She said

In the car.

On our way.

'I know' I said.

I just knew.

And felt very calm in that knowing.

That this was that time.

His time had come.

In time for those final few hours.

Together as a family.

And extended family.

Together in our grief.

Together in our togetherness.

Together.

To get on with our lives.

In our own unique ways.

Never given the chance to grow into adulthood.

Together.

Never given that time and space.

Together.

Taken away too soon.

Perhaps.

Yet in our togetherness we had created so many wonderful memories. Filled with fun, light and laughter. Filled with half sung songs, wisdom and stories.

So for that, I am grateful.

For being here, I am grateful.

And that's why I am living life to the fullest of my ability.

And I help others to do the same.

If you're stuck, I can help you get unstuck.

If you want to change direction, I can help.

Whatever you would like to have happen.

When you wish.

For life is precious.

So lets live it.

To our fullest.
